Why Delhi sucks {so much} - Part I

I am a true blue Mumbaiyaa … to the core. IM(H)O, it is the best place to stay in India – the great weather (ok, the rainy season is a bit of a problem), a pulsating nightlife ( I barely qualify here but going by Bombay Times you will agree with my point), excellent public transport , chic restaurants ( I strongly urge you good people to try out Malwani cuisine), a decent public, and above all the reliable power supply. I may wax eloquent over the last point, but you have to stay in Delhi to appreciate the 24X7 electric supply in Bombay. Sample his, the average Delhite (what a sucky name!) goes without electricity for three to four hours everyday. And that too in May. I shudder to think about the state of affairs in June. The temperature averages around 44° C.

The public transport here comprises of rundown buses, autos, taxis and the repulsive rickshaw- wallahs (those dudes still around?). My daily trips to the India Habitat Center starts with a rickshaw ride from Mandaoli to Shekharpur “Red Light Area” ( I can hear ya giggling under your breath. There ain’t no brothel. Apparently the “Red Light Area” gets its name from the traffic signal. See, Delhi logic at its best). Then , I board a bus to Lodhi Road ( a tony locality with horribly over-priced restaurants). A word about Delhi’s local buses. Picture an aging BEST bus. Ok, now drape the exterior with peeling green paint (with dirty graffiti thrown in for good measure). These buses have two conductors (on either of the doors) as ravaging Delhites don’t have the common civic sense to enter from the rear door and alight from the front one. Most of the buses are private and obviously the overriding interest is profiteering from the hapless passengers. There is no uniform rate-card (so common in Bombay’s buses and autos and taxis) so on one occasion I pay seven bucks (probably the right fare) and on the other I get charged ten rupees. Arguing with the uncouth conductors is an exemplary lesson in public humiliation. I had steeled myself to Hindi invectives during my stay in the IIT. In fact, many unprintable words had creeped into the common vocabulary there. But, in the public usage of them was a strict no-no. Delhi is a different animal though. Here you have to append bhenchod to every sentence to make your point across. Anyway back to the issue at hand – the bustling buses. Now, I’ve had my share of peak hour Mumbai traffic. But, I can assure you nothing can prepare you for Delhi’s buses. Tempers flare, sweaty (mostly of the co-passengers smeared onto you) clothes, lewd comments, wisecracks from the conductors, weirdos ogling at females and you precariously hanging onto the handle bars (praying fervently that the driver doesn’t brake hard again). And I have seen drivers drinking and driving. The fact autos don’t have any semblance of a meter so the fare depends on your bargaining power and your skin [the thicker the better].

The restaurants are a big disappointment (mebbe I need to go out of Lodhi Road and Mandaoli). The good ones have rates that don’t make sense and the seedy ones serve inedible food. The restaurants at India Habitat Center (Delhi O’ Delhi, the American Diner which also serves Indian food, Oriental Octopus (!) and Eatopia which is more of a dystopia ) are all ultra expensive. Take Eatopia for example, it serves two baturas and bland chole for eighty rupees. So, I undertake a long sojourn every noon to find a decent place to eat in. I miss SP and Food Court. Mandaoli is another issue. I fear eating there lest I come down with jaundice or other water/food communicable diseases.

I want to keep ranting more, as there is so much to rant about – the power outages, Saharan temperatures and more. But that's for another posting.

was in delhi for two months..it sucked ..and i was living in a far posher GK 2. But then the best deal is for u to go to nizamuddin area and there are lots of tandoori joints in that area which are quite cheap. similarly if u take the metro to Chandni Chowk or Chawri Bazar, then walk it to Jama Masjid, around gate 2 of the Jama masjid u will the really great non veg food, not forgetting the great karims' there also. the thing to remember about delhi is that it has a great tradition; both culinary and cultural; except that u have to dig deep and travel through the muck to see it. Yeah u might have to swear ur way in also...phat behenchod.

I couldn't agree with you more. I moved here from Mumbai three years ago and still hate it !It sucks BIG TIME for all the reasons you've listed and a dozen more. Unless you raise your voice to ten times its normal range when your speaking to somebody you're considered as good as invisible or 'varryyy quiet'.

Shoot ! In my view both cities sux .

But, student life is far better in Delhi , bcoz

Delhi is quite spacious and Mumbai is choking n much dirty n expensive with low quality

Almost all level colleges in Delhi n NCR have loads of space to walk ,jog ,sports, fests ,celebrations ..admiring nature's beauty.

Mumbai is a headache . Only good for materialistic , plastic n packed minds

N all beautiful Hill stations or desert ( Rajasthan ) are equally within reach.

Mubaikers boast for Pune n Goa hangouts ..Pune is okay ..But, Goa again is hype..

The poorest state Orissa have far better unexplored beaches than Goa.

Mumbai n Kolkata both stand for life within 4 walls , congested life ..even if you are rich ..Zombie life..huh...Fack !

You poor Mumbaikar (what an ugly euphemism!), you are waay too astonished to see the wide and open spacious delhi, your living room's dimensions in Mumbai have probably got more competition from an average Delhite's toilet size.
You are just used to pollution and seeing shit everywhere. Accept it, every place has ups and downs...mumbai the name itself sucks monkey ass!

You all can suck on your balls , THE TRUTH is i am neither from DELHI nor MUMBAI so i give you honest comments. Mumbai People are far far better then Delhi. It's the only place where you have security for girls who travel late night. It is nevertheless expensive but the city is worth living. Only those who dare and dream big live in Mumbai.

Delhi on the other hand sucks to the core. Filled with liar's, cooks, false attitude people and you talk about space ? wtf are you crazy ? Do you ever hear about Navi mumbai .It's fcukin spacious and amazing weather as it adjoins pune.

Those who can't afford to work hard and live in Mumbai can talk shit about it. The only thing i like about delhi is that it is closer to My homeland Jammu and Kashmir. Rest it can go fcuk itself !!

Student life in Delhi is very poor..most of the colleges & universities do not provide hostel facility as a result students and parents have to spend high amount..Also it does not show any vibrancy people here are only moneyminded...If you go to delhi I am sure for first few months u will feel like in hell..you can never love the city...

I totally agree. .. been to mumbai n now in delhi... food totally sucks in mumbai... all u get is either gujarati or southindian.... what d hell!!!!! Does mumbai have nothing on its own to offer ....
Oh yes, locals of mumbai such snobs.... speak to them in marathi they'll reply or else they'll stare at u n sometimes dont even bother to reply....
One of the dirtiest sea beaches i have evet seen... happens to be d biggest assest !!!!!

Dude you forgot to mention Delhi has no sea within a thousand miles of it! So you shouldn't be criticizing the seas of Mumbai!
And food! This shows you never explored Mumbai it has every ever made in India! Its an open cuisine bro! I am in Delhi since a month and really I stay hungry rather than eat the stupid crap they call food here

You dude are total sucker of donkey balls! You console yourself with the space that Delhi offers and you conveniently forget Delhi has nothing called a sea! Ha! I have people from asking me how does it feel to be actually living in a city with so many beaches and sea faces.
Delhi competes in raping women your men are brash have no mannerisms and talking etiquette.
And Delhi isn't polluted!? Ha h hahahahaaaa live your life with that thought!
You people are jealous and swoon at mumbaikars just thinking that we live in a place were all the Bollywood stars live and we even accidentally get to see them once in a while (ass burns dude)?
And finally you shiver to death in winter and burn to hell in summer so no competition on any fronts you 'I think I am the smartest alive' dumbass... So long :)
